Fine line bracelet and moon tattoo on wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line tattoo wraps around the wrist, drawn as a thin curved line with a dotted chain hanging below it. A small diamond shape and a crescent moon dangle from the chain, with a smaller crescent near the edge of the frame. The ink is solid black on a light skin tone, against a checked shirt sleeve in a monochrome photograph.

Hester Vane had mended clasps for the whole of Porthmellin for forty years, and she knew a broken chain by the sound it made when it was set down on the bench. The one the fishwife Mair brought in that February rang flat, like a bell with a crack in it. Two links were gone and the rest had gone thin with salt. "My mother's," Mair said. "She wore it to the boats and never once took it off."

Hester did not ask what had been hanging from it. Mair set the diamond-shaped charm down beside the chain, then a little crescent of tin that had come loose and rolled off into the grain of the bench. The moon had a notch in one horn, where something had bitten it years ago.
Hester worked through the night with the lamp pulled close. She cut a new run of fine links, dotted every second one so the chain would catch the light the way the sea did at dusk, and she hung the diamond and the moon back in their places. At the last she took the tin crescent, filed the notch smooth, and fixed it near the clasp where it could be seen only when the wearer lifted her wrist.
Mair came for it at dawn and fastened it on her own arm without a mirror. She held the wrist up to the window and the moon swung free. "She'd have liked that," Mair said, and went down to the harbour with the tide already turning.
