Fine line chain bracelet tattoo on wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a hand and wrist showing a fine line tattoo styled as a bracelet. A thin curved line runs around the wrist, with a dotted chain beneath it that holds a small outlined diamond pendant and a crescent moon. The plain background of a checked shirt sleeve keeps the focus on the delicate linework.

Before the bell at St Aldous, Nell Tarrant came down the lane with the lamp swinging, and found the yard gate open and a line of small bright beads strung across the cobbles, as if someone had dropped a necklace from a great height. The line ran from the flour bins to the well. At its end lay a diamond of cut glass no bigger than a thumbnail, and beside it a curl of silver the shape of a paring of new moon.

Her gran had told her the moon wore its chain loose at the wrist of the sky, and that when it slipped, the night went thin and the bread would not rise. Nell counted the links, nineteen of them, and wound them round her own wrist because her hands were cold and the metal was warm from the ground. She set the sponge to prove, banked the ovens, and kept her eyes on the dough, for fear the sky would notice her.
When the first loaves came out, the chain had cooled against her skin and the moon hung low over the water meadow, pale as a heel of dough. She walked to the stile, unhooked the pendant and hung it on the hawthorn where the path bent. Nobody saw it go. Then the sky lightened behind the church tower and the crescent slid up through the cloud, thinner, but whole.
That morning Nell scored a crescent into every loaf before it went in the oven, and the village stopped asking why. The chain never came back, and the bread rose anyway. Her wrist stayed bare, and the moon, which keeps its own accounts, never sent for it.
