Fine line chain bracelet tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line tattoo wraps around the wrist like a bracelet, with a thin curved band and a dotted chain hanging from it. A small outlined diamond pendant and a crescent moon sit along the chain, with a further crescent at the left edge. The black ink is sharp and even, shown in a black and grey photo against a checked shirt sleeve.

The elephant went in March, sold to a farm near Lincoln for the price of a decent caravan, and after that the big top stayed folded in its tin box behind the sheds at Haddon Green. Dad said the wire was all we had left. Nell Corrigan climbed it every morning before the frost burned off, and she wore the same thin silver band while she did it, with a row of dots hanging from it like stations along a line.

Her pendant was a little diamond Dad had cut from a biscuit tin lid, and beside it hung a crescent moon filed from an old teaspoon. He made them the night the ringmaster's cousin came to buy the lot. Nobody bought the lot. The cousin took the ticket booth and the ponies and left us the sky, he said, which was a joke nobody laughed at.

On the last Saturday we sold four tickets. Nell walked the wire anyway, in the cold, with a torch clipped to her belt because the lamps had gone. Halfway across she stopped, and the dots on her wrist caught the light, and I watched her count them the way you count stairs in the dark. Then she went on, the moon swinging and the diamond turning, and the four people in the empty seats stood up and clapped as if the whole house was full.

When she came down she didn't take the bracelet off. 'Always keep one thing that catches light,' she said, 'in case the lamps go.' We packed the wagons the next morning. I still have the spoon moon in my coat pocket, and I check it when the sky is too dark to see the road.
