Fine line cartoon figure on the lower abdomen
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A simple outline drawing of a cartoon creature with two large round eyes, a small pointed beak and two rounded lobes below, each with a curled inner stroke. The linework is thin and even in black ink with no shading. The tattoo sits on pale skin above the waistband of light blue jeans, and the image is framed closely on the tattoo.

The owl had been sitting in our Bramley tree since the last week of July, glaring at the windfalls as if they had personally insulted him. Dad called him Mr Pemberton and refused to pick the apples under his branch. Mum said that was nonsense, but she carried the ladder around the far side of the orchard all the same.

Nobody had asked the owl his opinion on the cider press. He had big round eyes that never blinked properly, a beak like a stubbed pencil, and two fat folded wings he kept tucked against his ribs whenever he was thinking, which was often. On the Saturday the travelling pressers arrived with their van and their radio, he hopped down onto the bonnet and sat there like a pensioner at a bus stop until they gave up and drove off.
By the end of August the wasps had taken over the crates and the wind had started to turn the leaves over, showing their pale undersides. I went out at dusk with a torch and found him on the lowest branch, eyes wide, watching me as though I owed him an explanation. I didn't have one. I just sat down in the grass beside the trunk, and we waited together for the moon.
In the morning the branch was bare and there was a single feather on the windfalls, placed neatly on top of the biggest Bramley. Dad picked it up, turned it over, and said it was a fair trade for the ladder.
