Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a single-line drawing of a simple cartoon creature with two large round eyes, each with a dot pupil, and a rounded body with two curved shapes below the head. The linework is thin and even, in dark grey to black ink, on pale skin. The design sits centrally in the frame, with a denim waistband running across the lower edge of the image.

The ferry to Gull Holm had been cancelled for the third morning running, so Maud Tregarthen had nothing to do but sit in the harbour office and doodle on the back of the tide tables. Her pen kept drawing the same creature: a round-eyed thing with a long wedge of a head, two stubby lumps for feet, and an expression of mild surprise that she found hard to shake. She had named it Dorrit before she had decided it was anything at all.

By Thursday the harbourmaster had seen it on a pile of mooring forms, and Ron from the chandlery had seen it scratched on a fish crate. Nobody could say who had started it. Someone chalked a copy beside the bait shed, then another on the slipway, and by the weekend children were waiting by the wall with pockets full of mussel shells, laying them out in neat rows for a creature nobody had met.

Maud said nothing. She had only ever meant to pass the time. But on Sunday evening, when the wind dropped and the boats came in quiet, she found a small wet shape sitting on the office step, blinking up at her with those same enormous eyes, a mackerel tail hanging from its mouth like a bookmark.

She fetched her pen, drew a second Dorrit beside the first, and wrote beneath them in capitals: SAILING TOMORROW, PROBABLY. The creature took the tail, read the tide table with great seriousness, and wandered off along the quay, leaving a trail of small prints that the rising tide was already beginning to take.
