Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line tattoo of a simple cartoon figure with two large round eyes, each with a dot pupil, and a small nose. The body is a rounded outline with two curved shapes below the head. The linework is thin and even, shown in black ink against pale skin, with no shading or colour. The tattoo sits on the lower back above the waistband of blue jeans, with the composition cropped tightly around the design.

Dear Maud, the courgettes have gone mad this year and so has the shed. You will not believe what I found behind the stacked terracotta pots on Tuesday: a little wide-eyed thing scratched into the damp plaster with a nail, all round head and round eyes, peering out as if it had been caught stealing runner beans. Mr Okafor from plot twelve swears it was there when he took the lease over in the spring, but he also swears his marrows talk to him, so I am not inclined to trust him.

I spent the whole of Wednesday trying to decide what it was. A mole, I thought at first, because of the nose, and then an owl, because of the eyes, and then something altogether more Dickensian when I looked at the two curled shapes tucked under its chin, which might be paws or might be a very worried pudding. Rosa from the next plot said it was graffiti by the boys from the rec. I said graffiti does not usually wear spectacles.

So on Thursday I left a jar of blackcurrant jam on the bench beside it, with a note under the lid asking it to kindly stop staring at me while I weeded. This morning the jar was empty, the lid was lying on the path, and there was a fresh smudge of soil on the plaster just under the nose, as if someone had leaned in for a proper look.

I have decided to leave it be. The shed is a better shed for having a witness in it, and I suspect my potatoes will do better for the company. Come up at the weekend and bring your good secateurs. Do not bring the dog. I think it would frighten the mole.
