Fine line cat on a side torso
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single small tattoo of a stylised cat outline in a continuous, thin black line, with pointed ears and a tail curling around the base. The linework is clean and even, and the lines appear crisp against pale skin. The image is black and white, with the tattoo placed centrally on the upper side of the torso and a dark strap and waistband framing the right and lower edges.

Our barn cat had her kittens in the January hay, three days before the snow sealed the lane above the Clun valley. Dad said leave her be. Mum said we could not keep a litter in the tack room with the feed sacks. I was ten and had already decided the grey one with the bent tail was mine, so I sat on an upturned bucket and counted the minutes of her breathing.

Nan's cardigan smelled of diesel and peppermints. She came out at dusk with a torch and a saucer of warm milk, and she showed me how to hold my hand low so the cat could smell it first. "Let her choose you," she said. "Cats don't come when they're called. They come when they've made up their minds."
The grey one chose the kitchen windowsill in the end and would not be moved. Dad called her Sixpence and pretended he hadn't. Every morning she sat with her tail wrapped round her feet, watching the frost lift off the gate in a shrinking square of light, and every morning I told her about school in a whisper so Mum wouldn't hear me talking to a cat.
When the thaw came in March the vet's van crept up the lane, and it was Nan who had to tell me Sixpence wouldn't be waking on the sill again. I still have the drawing I made that winter on the back of a feed invoice: one unbroken line for the ears, the body, the tail coiled round the base, and beneath it, in my worst handwriting, the word stay.
