Cat head and curled tail on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a simple outline of a cat's head with pointed ears and three whiskers on each side, placed above a single curved line that loops into a tail-like curl. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The skin is shown in a close, slightly angled photograph against a softly blurred indoor background.

The cat arrived in the spring, a grey tom who had come in through the loading bay after the night van and walked straight across the subs' desk as though he owned the masthead. Nobody claimed him. Mrs Okafor fed him tuna from the canteen and named him Full Stop, because he sat on every page he could reach and would not move until the deadline had passed.

That summer the paper ran a feature on a fishing village closing its school, and the young reporter who had written it had left a semicolon where a full stop should have gone. Mrs Okafor lifted her pencil to strike it out, then hesitated. The sentence after the mark was about a boy who would not leave the harbour wall. The two halves hung together the way a cat's head hangs over its own curling tail.

She left the semicolon in. The reporter got a short note, and the feature ran exactly as written. That morning Full Stop slept on the proof, curled across the margin with one ear raised, as if waiting for the next thing on the page that needed to carry on.
