Fine line city skyline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline of a city skyline runs across the forearm, with tall spires, stepped blocks and a large dotted-rim circular structure at the centre. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill. The plain, softly lit skin background keeps the small design as the focus.

The cradle swung on its wire whenever a lorry rumbled under the flyover, so Dessie had learned to keep one hand on the squeegee and his eyes on the skyline, which at twenty storeys was the only thing that stayed still. From up there the city came down to a single black edge, spires on the left, the stepped blocks of the old bank in the middle, and the big wheel turning slow as a clock hand over the river.

His daughter Ruth was nine and had decided she would be an architect, so on Sunday mornings he brought her a pencil and the back of a cleaning schedule and told her to draw what he could see. She didn't draw it the way the postcards did. She put in the pigeons on the ledge and the crane that had been there since Easter, and she dotted the rim of the wheel, one dot for each carriage, because she said the people inside were only passing through and deserved their own marks.
Last month the lift jammed between the eleventh and twelfth floors for forty minutes, and Dessie spent the wait tracing the outline on the back of his own hand with a biro while the engineer swore at the cable. He did not tell Ruth about the lift. He showed her the sketch instead, and she asked which one was their estate, the squat block with the lopsided aerial. He pointed to it, she frowned and said it was too small to bother with, so he let her leave it out.
On the drive home she took the schedule back and added one more line at the very end, a flat strip with a single window lit, and wrote underneath in capitals, THAT'S OURS. He pressed the cradle's button and the platform began to descend, and the skyline slid down the glass beside them a little lower each time, until the roofs came up to meet them and there was nothing left to see but the window in the sky.
