Fine line doodles on thighs and knees
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of two legs in dark socks, lying on a light grey bed sheet. The tattoos are thin single-needle outlines of a sprig, a flying saucer, a crystal, a triangle, a small banner with lettering, and two open hands. The ink is greyish and the composition is loose, with the designs scattered across the knees and upper legs.

You find the rings in the wrong pocket of the wrong waistcoat, which is how you know the morning has gone sideways. Your sister is upstairs in the bridal suite rehearsing a speech she has already memorised, and the registrar is due at two. Your hands shake as you turn the cheap satin lining inside out.

The marquee in Nettle Hollow sits in a field of sheep who have opinions about the bunting. Aunt Ida, who once claimed she could find water with a bent coat hanger, walks the lawn with a quartz crystal on a length of thread, swinging it over the grass as though the rings might be sulking under the clover. Behind her the triangle of pennants snaps in the wind, and someone has hung a paper flying saucer from the tent pole, glowing faintly where the bulb inside has been left on since dawn.
You follow the swing of the crystal to the hawthorn hedge, where a sprig of rosemary has come loose from a buttonhole and lies on the path like a dropped bookmark. Underneath it, bright as a coin, the rings sit in a puddle of rainwater. You pick them up. Your palms are wet and open, the way they were when you were nine and your father put a frog in them.
When you get back, your sister holds out her hand without looking, and you drop the rings into it. She laughs, says the sheep would have made a better best man, and walks towards the marquee with the saucer light swinging behind her.
