The tin bird had been riveted to the stern of the Marguerite for forty years before anyone thought to ask why it faced backwards. Dad said it was for the herons, so they would know which way the river ran. I was nine when I believed him, and eleven when I stopped, the summer the lock at Stoke Mill jammed with a drowned sheep and Uncle Tobias sat on the coping for three days eating pork pies.

We had two iron rings bolted to the towpath for the mooring lines, worn so smooth by rope that the paint had gone entirely. Every evening Tobias looped a line through each one, pulled them tight, and checked them twice, which was the only thing he ever did twice. A barge held to the bank by two points stays where it is, he told me. Hold to one and the river takes you round in a slow circle until you forget which bank was home.
The turn came on a wet Thursday when the lock gate groaned open and Tobias did not come up the steps. I found him on the towpath with one hand locked around the ring and the other pressing a line flat against the wet stones, while the water rose faster than either of us had planned for. I did what he had taught me. I took a turn round the second ring and leaned back, and the Marguerite stopped swinging.
In the morning he showed me the bird properly, the way its tin facets caught the light like folded paper. Keep your bearings on two things, he said, and I nodded as though it were a riddle. We still sleep aboard. The bird still faces backwards, and every evening I check both lines twice.
