Matching fine line bracket tattoos on two arms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms rest crossed over each other, each carrying a small tattoo of angular bracket shapes with a single dot. The linework is thin, crisp and uniform, in solid black ink with no shading. The tattoos are set against soft, warm skin tones, with the dark fabric of clothing blurred in the background.

The ferry ledger of Harrowmere marked a bend in the Lusk with three chevrons, and a dot wherever the ford was shallow enough to wade. Tessaly Brand had inked it into the margin of every chart she drew for twenty years. When the Crown Surveyor asked why the river needed so many turns, she told him the water had never once gone straight.

Her apprentice, Oren Vell, learned the notation faster than anyone and then learned to argue with it. He wanted the dot moved downstream, closer to the mill. They fought over ink across the drawing table through a whole wet spring, until he packed his brass dividers into a canvas roll and took the northern road to the salt towns.

Letters came with the carters. Each one was folded small and sealed with green wax, and each had a sketch of the river in one corner, the bends counted in a hand that grew looser with every season. Tessaly never answered in words. She sent back charts with the dot moved, then moved again, until one autumn the chevrons on her map pointed the same way as his.

The last parcel arrived in midwinter with no note, only a sheet where the ford sat exactly where she had first put it. Beside it, in his neat capitals, was a single word: WADE. She folded the sheet into her coat, walked the Lusk at low water, and counted the bends aloud until she reached the place where the stones showed through.
