Planets and moon phases on both feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet rest on a light cushion, each showing a vertical column of small circular tattoos along the side of the foot. The left foot has planets that grow larger towards the heel, including one ringed planet, while the right foot has moon phases shaded from dark to light. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, in dark brown-grey ink on pale skin, with a plain carpet in the background.

Sit nearer, the wind up here takes half of every sentence and gives it to the goats. My grandmother told this on the Hollin pass the winter the snow came early, and she swore every word was true, which is what storytellers say when they have added the best bits themselves.

There were two brothers in the village under Carn Dhu, Tomas and Ewan, and they could agree on nothing except the sky. Tomas wanted to know where the wandering stars went when they slipped behind the ridge. Ewan wanted to know why the moon grew thin and then fat again, like bread rising in a warm oven. They argued over every supper until their mother set a wooden spoon down between them and told them to go and find out.
So Tomas walked east with a brass glass and a notebook, and Ewan walked west with a tin of ink and a pocketful of pennies for the moon-watchers in the inns. Every month for seven years they wrote to each other. Tomas sent drawings of a ringed planet, its band tilted like a hat brim. Ewan sent back the moon in pencil, a sliver, then a half, then a full bowl of silver, and each one was a little more certain of itself than the last.
Then the letters stopped. Tomas came home in the thaw with his glass wrapped in a shirt and found Ewan's chair by the hearth with his coat still hanging on the back. He sat down in it. Then he lifted the brass glass to the pass, looked up for a long time, and said, quite loudly, that he had finally worked out where the planets go. The moon, he said, had always known the way back.
