Small fine line tattoo of a paper plane with a touch of red on the inner forearm near the wrist.

Paper plane on the inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small paper plane is tattooed on the inner forearm close to the wrist, drawn with thin dark blue-black linework and simple shading along the underside of the wings. A small red accent sits on the upper fin, the only colour in the design. The plain pale skin and dark blue fabric behind the arm keep the focus on the small motif.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third night out from Tilbury, the purser caught me at the rail with a sheet of ship's stationery folded half into a wing. He didn't take it off me. He asked what it was for, and I said it was for the Atlantic, which was the only true thing I had.

I had been folding since Southampton, when my aunt gave me a ream of paper she'd meant for household accounts. Every evening I wrote one line on a sheet, creased it into a nose and a pair of wings, and let it go over the stern to see whether the westerly would carry it back toward Liverpool. Mostly it went down in the wake like a dropped glove. The one with the red fin was different. Mrs Hadley was stamping the manifests at the purser's desk, and when I asked for a spare drop of ink she gave me the whole pot, so I dipped the tip of one wing and marked the side that faced home.

We ran into a gale off the Gulf of Biscay that sent everything loose. That plane lifted off the rail in the dark, hung for a moment in the lamplight above the deck, and then turned back towards the ship as though it had remembered something. I watched it climb past the funnel and out of sight. In the morning I found it wedged in the lifebelt rack on the boat deck, dry, the red still bright.

I pressed it flat in the back of my logbook, where the ink has gone the colour of weak tea. I never did find out where the wind would have taken it.
