Small heart with fine lines on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare ankle and foot resting on grass. A tiny solid black heart sits at the centre of several thin, straight lines that spread out in two directions, forming a small symmetrical motif. The black ink is crisp and delicate, and the image is composed so the tattoo is the clear focal point against the soft, textured background.

The gulls had been at the fish market since before light, and Nell Cardew was two baskets behind when the post boat nosed into the quay. Danny Roskilly threw her a line without looking up. 'Your father's bird,' he said, and nodded at the cracked crab pot in the stern, where something small and grey shifted in the weed.

It was a kittiwake, a young one, with a hook still caught in its wing. Nell knelt on the wet stone and worked the barb free with her pliers while the bird pecked at her knuckles. Her father had taught her that kittiwakes came back to the same ledges every spring, and that a bird which had been handled once would remember the hands. He had drawn one for her on the back of a tide table years ago: a single dark dot at the middle, and thin strokes fanning out on either side like the wake behind a rowing boat.
Roskilly watched the bird stagger, then flatten its wings against the stone. 'Thought it was dead,' he said. 'Nearly was.' Nell wrapped it in her shawl and carried it up the harbour steps, past the chandlery and the shuttered net loft, where the gulls on the roof turned their heads all at once to watch her go.
At the top of the steps she opened her hands. The kittiwake sat for a long moment, blinking at the grey sky. Then it lifted straight up, the way her father had said they always did, and the wings opened over the harbour in two thin strokes with a dark heart held at their centre. Nell stood with empty palms until the bird was a speck above the breakwater, and then she went back down to the baskets.
