White ink roses on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm is photographed in black and white, with a cluster of roses tattooed in white ink that shows mainly through pale, raised outlines. A large rose with layered petals sits in the centre, a smaller bloom sits above it, and leaves or petals trail toward the lower left. The soft focus and dim background keep attention on the light linework.

In the lowland kingdom of Aumery, the queen forbade white roses in her gardens, for the court held that they belonged to funerals and broken treaties. So you grew them anyway, in the shade behind the scullery wall, and you learned to coax them without colour: pale grafts, pale petals, nothing a guard would notice from the gallery above.

One winter old Hesketh, the queen's seamstress, came to your gate with a sleeve gone yellow at the cuff. She wanted a rose worked in white thread so it would vanish into the linen. You told her that roses hide best when the light falls from the side. Lift the petals out of the dark with a fine edge and they show only to someone who looks closely, and nobody in Aumery had looked closely at anything since the last war.
Years later the king's men came with torches to search the wardens' cottages for the banned flower. They tore up every bed, trampled the cuttings and pried the flagstones from the path. By morning they had found only mud and a single white bloom pressed flat inside the almanac on your mantel, and they laughed at it, because who keeps a flower in a book?
You kept the almanac. Each spring the queen sends a page-boy to ask for it, and each spring she tilts the open book toward the window so the petals rise out of the paper like frost on a pane. She says nothing. She simply sends the boy back with a jar of seed.
