Fine line finger tattoos of an eye and moon
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Several small black tattoos sit across the fingers of both hands, including an eye, a crescent moon, chevron marks and short lines. The linework is fine and solid black with no shading, and the ink is entirely black. The hands are crossed over the chest with a silver crescent moon necklace and rings, and a dark lace bra is visible below.

The boatmen of Carrick Holm counted the tides on their fingers, because paper went to pulp in the boathouse and the sea never forgave a wrong sum. Each joint held a sign. A crescent meant the neaps, a short line marked every hour the water hung slack, and a chevron stood for the knot of current off the Seal Stacks that had taken three men the year Ruth Maddock was born. She learned the signs from her grandfather, and at sixteen she added an eye to the back of her hand so that the watching would never stop, even when she slept.

Tam Greer came down to the slip one grey evening with his jaw set and a borrowed lamp. The herring had gone deep, he said, and his mother needed the money before the shop debt fell due. Ruth did not look up from her mending. "The moon is thin tonight," she said. "Count it." He held out his hand, and she traced the crescent with the point of her needle, then the three short lines, then the chevron, until he went pale and sat down on an upturned creel.
He waited with her until the tide turned, which was the only honest thing she could offer him. Out past the Stacks the water lay flat as slate, and the men on the other boats laughed at the old woman's counting. At the ninth line the flat water began to heave in a long brown ridge, and a single gull dropped onto the slip, dead, as if the sea had sent it back. Tam watched the swell take the empty boat he had meant to row, and he did not speak again until the lamp on the far rock had been lit and put out three times.
Ruth tapped the eye on her hand, once, and went back to her mending while the moon sank behind the Stacks.
