Fine line forearm tattoos in a five-photo collage

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A collage of five photographs showing the same forearm and elbow covered in small, delicate tattoos. The designs include a botanical sprig with flower heads, a pair of eyelashes, several lines of small script, a tiny triangle and a pinky promise hand drawn in thin black linework. The ink is black and the images are shot in a bright, domestic setting with white cabinets and window light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The eel-woman came up the towpath at Tewkes Lock just as the lamps were being lit on the Marigold, asking after her boy. Nobody on the boats knew a Tam. She had a sprig of meadowsweet tucked in her apron strings and would not say where she had come from, only that the river had given her a list of places and this lock was the last one on it.

Old Jack Ruddle, who kept the cut's tally in a greasy ledger, remembered a lad who had sat on the lock beam the evening before with the lock-keeper's girl, Nell. They had hooked little fingers the way children do, and Nell had sworn to walk him home by lamplight. Nobody had seen either of them since. The woman sat down on the coping stone and said that a promise hooked that way holds until one of the pair closes their eyes, and that Nell had always been a girl who closed hers.

They found Nell at the weir with her face turned to the water, her lashes wet and dark against her cheeks. She opened her eyes when Jack touched her shoulder and said she had kept watch the whole night through, every bend, every reed, and had only shut them at dawn when she could hold them open no longer. The boy lay in the reed bed below the sluice, asleep with an unlit lamp in his lap and his small finger still crooked around nothing.

The eel-woman knelt, pressed the meadowsweet into his palm, and said nothing at all. Jack saw the lamp flare on its own, once, then go out over the water like a closed eye.
