Fine line geometric symbols on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on a laptop keyboard, showing a small fine line tattoo on the inner forearm near the wrist. The tattoo is made of thin, angular outlines forming a square spiral, a chevron and a V-shaped mark arranged in a diagonal line. The photograph is in black and white, with soft, even lighting and a dark background.

The ferrymen of Cassavel never wrote a route down in full, because paper goes to pulp in the marsh. They drew it in shorthand on the back of the hand, or on the wrist where a sleeve would hide it from the tax clerks. Old Hesper Lund taught me the three marks the way her mother had taught her: the square spiral for the sluice that turns you back on yourself, the chevron for the way the current runs, and the V for the fork where the Grey Mere parts from the Lesser.

For a whole winter I practised them in the margins of the tally books until my fingers knew the angles without my eyes. Hesper said the marks were only a handrail, that a good ferrywoman carried the whole marsh in her head and the signs were just there to catch you when your head went soft. I didn't believe her until the spring the fog came down thick as wool and the lantern guttered out on the causeway at midnight.
I stood at the fork with my wrist raised to the moon and traced the chevron with a cold thumb. It pointed left. The V said to take the lesser channel, though every instinct I owned insisted on the wide one. I took the lesser. Behind me, where the wide channel should have run, I heard the causeway give way with a sound like a wet sheet tearing in two.
Hesper was waiting on the far bank with a fresh lamp and no questions. 'You read it,' she said, and that was the whole of her praise, and it lasted me forty years on the water.
