A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The quill had been dropped on the wrong side of the Atlantic, which is how it ended up in a café in Lima with nothing to write but the morning's gossip. It lay on the marble counter beside a sugar bowl and listened to a barista call out orders in three languages, and it resented every one of them. Feathers, it had decided long ago, were meant for the high wind over open water, not for the hiss of a steam wand.

Then a woman came in with a laptop under one arm and a paper cup in her hand, and she sat by the window and typed as though the keys owed her money. The quill watched her fingers move. It noticed the blue of the sky through the glass, the dull grey of the street, and it began, very slowly, to make a plan. A quill cannot fly, but it can fall, and it can fall in exactly the right place.

It slid off the counter as the door chimed open, skittered under a table, and drifted through the gap into the sunlight. Somewhere past the tables it found a draught, and the draught carried it up and over the railing, past the planters and the stacked wooden crates, until it came down with a soft tap on the bare arm of a stranger who was reaching for her coffee.

She did not scream. She looked at the feather for a long moment, then smiled at the laptop screen as if it had told her something she already knew. The quill had no words left to say, so it simply stayed where it had landed, blue at the crown and black at its edges, and decided that this was, after all, a sort of flight.
