Small black line tattoo of a snaffle bit on the side of a finger, set against a blurred red and orange background.

Snaffle bit tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A single snaffle bit, drawn as a thin black outline with two ring-shaped ends joined by a straight bar, runs along the side of a finger. The linework is simple and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The soft, blurred red and orange background makes the tattoo stand out, and the image is shot close up at an angle.

Nell had been told the keep was empty since the siege, so she was not expecting the grey mare to be standing in the old chapel, saddled and patient, her head turned towards the broken door as though she had been waiting for the bell.

Her father's ledger said the Ashby horses had gone over the hill with the baron's men, every one of them. Nell had counted the hoof-prints in the mud at the gate, and they did not lead out. They led in, and stopped.

The mare wore a plain bridle of old leather, the bit a single length of steel with a ring at either end, bright where the reins had worn it. Nell had seen one like it in the armoury at Thorne, hung on a nail above a dead man's helmet. She reached for the cheekpiece, and the mare lowered her head to meet her hand, as easy as a dog that knows its name.

When the sun came through the arrow-slit it lit the rings like two small moons. Nell unbuckled the reins and led the mare out through the gate, and the marks in the mud were the only proof that anyone had ever been there. By the time the village saw them coming down the lane, she had decided what she would tell her father: that the horse had come home on its own, and that it had brought its own bit, which was the only part of the business she did not intend to explain.
