Cartoon penguin on a hovering platform

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A cartoon penguin with large round eyes and a pointed beak stands on a flat, disc-shaped platform with wheel-like shapes beneath it. The bold black outlines and solid black fills are set against the white and grey of the skin, with the platform's panel lines and shading adding detail. The tattoo sits centrally on the forearm in a close, straight-on photograph.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tent had been losing its stripes for three winters, and by spring the bear had gone to a farm in Shropshire and the clown had taken to the bottle. What the show still had was the penguin. Nobody knew where she came from. Old Mrs Tallow said she had hatched from an egg in the cold cellar of Ferris Hall, and Mr Dunn swore he had bought her off a sailor for a sack of sugar.

She stood on the tin platform that Abel Crane had welded from a dead stove and four pram wheels. Each evening she rolled three times round the sawdust ring, upright and dignified, her great round eyes fixed on the back rows where nobody sat any more. The children who came were few, but they clapped when she turned, and that was enough to keep the lamps lit.

On the last night of the season the rain came in sideways and the canvas sagged like wet bread. Abel wheeled the platform out to the lane to check the axles. The penguin hopped on without being asked, looked at the dark field beyond the hedge, and tipped her beak towards it the way she did before every show.

Abel pushed. The platform went through the gate, over the ditch and out across the wet grass, slow at first and then faster, until the lamplight from the tent was just a smudge behind them. Nobody in the tent saw where it went, except the one boy who had stayed behind to sweep, and he said afterwards that she never once looked back.
