Fine line hand tattoos with arrow and stars
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest on a dark-clad knee, showing fine line tattoos in black ink. The largest design is an arrow with a branching sprig on the back of the hand, drawn with thin, delicate strokes and some dotted detail. Smaller marks on the fingers include a crescent moon, a few tiny stars and a short line motif, all in muted black and grey tones on a soft, neutral background.

The rain had been coming sideways off the river since eight, and by ten the cardboard trays of bare-root whips on my trestle had gone soft at the corners. I kept my hands in my pockets between customers, which is how I nearly missed him. He stood at the end of the row where the umbrellas dripped onto the cobbles, reading my handwritten labels as if they were a bus timetable.

"Rowan," he said. "Have you got any that aren't sulking?" I pulled a bundle from the bucket, the bark still bright and the leaves gone to copper. He turned one over, then another, and asked how long it would take to root in a pot on a windowsill. I told him honestly that it might not, that most things don't survive being moved, and he laughed as though I'd made a joke. His daughter had taken the flat above the chemist's, he said, and he wanted something of his on her step before the lease ran out.
I wrapped the cutting in newspaper and a twist of wet twine. He paid in coins, counted them twice, and left a sixpence on the tray for the jar I keep for strays. Then he tapped the chalk sign at the edge of my pitch, the arrow I'd drawn to say the Tuesday stall was beyond the gates, and told me it was pointing the wrong way.
After he'd gone I looked at the sign properly. He was right. The arrow pointed back toward the bridge, toward the car park and the rest of the town. I rubbed it out with my thumb, redrew it towards the water, and found three small stars I'd scratched into the corner years ago for luck, still there under the wet. When pack-up came the sixpence was sitting on the tray, bright with rain, and I left it where it was.
