The shutter on the Skerrin light had been closed on the seaward side since the winter the Alder boat went down, and nobody on the island had thought to open it again. Maggie Lusk did the thinking for them. She came up the tower stair with a bucket of lamp oil in one hand and a bradawl in the other, and the men on the quay watched her climb until the lamp room windows went gold.

She did not cut a window. She bored a row of small holes in the brass, one after another, the way her father had taught her to score a sail, and when she was done she had drawn a heart, its point toward the drop and its two round lobes toward the cliffs. It was only an outline. A filled heart would have kept the light in, she said, and the light was no use to anyone sitting at home.

That night the lamp swept across the Sound, and where the beam came through the brass, thin bright lines lay on the black water in the shape of a heart. The Alder crew was out again, having left late on the tide. They steered for the shape the way a child steers for a kitchen window, and came in past the skerries with their oars knocking the rock but not breaking.

Maggie kept the lamp another thirty years. The heart was never filled in. When the island's young men asked why, she told them a heart is only worth drawing if you leave room for the light to come through it.
