Fine line lotus on the side ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small lotus flower is drawn in a single thin black outline on the side of the torso, just below the arm. The petals are open with a few inner lines suggesting the centre, and the design uses no shading or fill. The skin is pale and the grey vest top and tiled wall in the background sit beside it.

The drone that mapped the drained reservoir came back with its lens cracked, and Imke spent the night in the greenhouse ring with a magnifier and a flat tin of gelatine plates, trying to work out what the bloom in the image had been. Not a weed, the seed-catalogue said. Not a crop. A water plant from before the flood-years, grown in the archive vats for ornament, which nobody had eaten or needed.

She knew the shape before she finished reading the note. Eight petals opening out from a closed bud, the outer ones broad, the inner ones folded tight, and a few strokes in the centre where the seed-head would sit. Someone had drawn it with one thin ink line and no shading at all, the way the old engineers marked valves they meant to keep.
Imke had kept a rule since she was small: nothing grew on the ark that did not pay its way in air or protein. Yet the drawing sat in her palm like a question with no answer. She took a sterile pin, dipped it in iodine, and began to scratch the outline onto the back of her own wrist, not because she wanted it there but because her hand needed something to do that was neither counting nor waiting.
By dawn the wrist was raw and the outline was crooked, petals bulging where the pin had slipped. She held it up against the greenhouse light and saw that it looked, in its wobbling way, exactly like the drawing. The valve-keepers had never needed it to be perfect. They had only needed it to be kept. She logged the sample, sealed the plate, and went to tell the water crew the bloom had been found.
