A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags Turnbull had walked the canal path every night for thirty years, carrying her lantern from bridge to bridge, and she had never once seen the water flower. Her mother had. Her mother said it opened only when the city went quiet, its petals folding back the way a shop shutter comes down, and that anyone who found it should leave three coins on the stone beside it and walk home without looking back.

Then the gasworks went up, and the canal ran black with oil, and the flower came up anyway, pale and stubborn in the muck under Cutter's Bridge. Mags found it on a Tuesday, a little after two, when the rain had stopped and the gulls had given up on the bins. Its petals were layered one over another, like the sides of a boat seen through a window, each edge drawn sharp as wire.

She had no coins. She had three pennies her son had been given for a sweet he never bought, and she set them down in a row on the wet stone. The flower did not move. She waited. Then the water beneath it went still, a single bell rang from the church at the top of the hill, and she understood that she was meant to walk home.

She did not look back. In the morning the petals were gone, and in their place were three small dark rings on the stone, which the council never managed to scrub away.
