Fine line marks and xo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close side view of a finger with a small fine line tattoo made of two short cross-bars, a looping stroke and a dotted xo motif. The linework is thin and black, with no shading, and the ink sits on a pale skin tone against a plain, warm-toned background. The composition is tight and centred on the finger, with a blue painted nail at the tip.

Our new lodger, Joan Telfer, had a way of leaving things mended. She'd come down in the mornings with a button sewn back onto her cardigan, or a split seam closed with a neat stitch that ran along like a ladder. I told her she should have been a sailmaker. She said her father had mended nets in Lowestoft, and that the only knot worth trusting was one you could untie with your teeth if you had to.
When the thread ran short I tied off with a loop, the way Joan had shown me, and pulled it snug. Then I worked two small crosses along the hem, one after the other, and a ring beside them where the wind had worried the cloth thin. I didn't think about it until I'd bitten the thread and seen what I'd made: two crosses and a round, like a tide mark drawn in ink.
Joan found them that evening while folding the sheets on the landing. She ran her thumb over the stitches and laughed, low, and said it was the best kind of kiss, the sort that held things together. I left the hem as it was. The sea came in under the window all night, and nothing on those sheets came loose.
