The ferryman's daughter in Halvorsen had never seen the far side of the bay, only the ridge of hills that stood against the sky each evening like a row of teeth. Her father said the hills were older than the town and that no one who crossed them came back the same. So when the sea fog rolled in one November night and her brother Tomas did not return from the lamp-house, she took the lantern off its hook and walked out past the last net shed.

The lane climbed through wet bracken. Somewhere above her a dog barked, then stopped, as if someone had called it in. She followed the sound of water over stones until the path bent north and she found the ridge itself, a single unbroken line of black cut into the grey. At its highest point one peak was dusted pale, the snow catching what little light the lantern gave, and beneath it the hill fell away in soft shadow like a held breath.

Tomas was sitting on a boulder at the foot of that peak, whittling a stick he had no reason to be holding. He looked up and said she had come the long way round, which was true, and that the hills had wanted to see who would come looking. She told him their mother was waiting with the kettle on. He nodded and stood, and together they turned back toward the sea, and behind them the peak loosened from the fog and was only a mountain again.

At the bottom of the lane the lamp-house light swept over them, slow and patient. Tomas said he had never known the hills to give anything back. The girl said they had not given him back, not really, only lent him, and that she would have to walk the ridge again in spring to return the favour.
