Fine line script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a woman in a white tank top with one hand resting on her pregnant belly and the other arm folded across her body. A thin black script tattoo runs down the outer forearm, with fine, even linework. The image is in soft, low-key colour with warm skin tones, a red manicure and a pale ring, and the background is out of focus.

Harold had painted the name of the boat three times before Maud Ferris came back to the yard, and each time she had asked him to make the letters smaller. "Smaller," she said now, standing on the slipway with her coat buttoned to the throat. "Like handwriting. Like somebody wrote it in a hurry and meant it."

He rolled a sable liner between his finger and thumb until it came to a point. It was the finest brush he owned, the kind that could lay down one hair's width of colour and no more, and he had bought it the winter his eyes first began to go. Lettering that fine could not be rushed. A hitch of the wrist and the stroke would drag, and the whole line would look like a child's scribble on a wet pier.
The words were already chalked on the planking in her round, careful hand: keep the lamp lit. Her son had taken the Gannet out in February and had not come back past the breakwater. Harold had known the boy since he was small enough to be lifted over the gunwale to watch the paint go on. He did not know how a man painted a sentence like that onto a hull without it becoming a prayer, or a lie.
He began at the bow, where the wood was driest. Each letter took him a long breath. When he reached the k, his hand did not shake, and that surprised him more than anything. Maud watched the brush move the way she might watch a candle carried across a dark room. When he finished the last e and lifted the liner, the line sat on the grey hull as clean as if it had always been there, and the lamp on the quay caught it and held it.
