Fine line script quote on the upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a fine line script tattoo reading "dreamer of impossible dreams" across the upper back, just below the neck. The lettering is thin, even and slightly looping, with a few letters sitting slightly higher than others. The skin is pale and softly lit with a blurred background, and the tattoo is the clear focus of the frame.

Dennis Abbot hands you a fish box at four in the morning and tells you the boat has one rule, which is that nobody names a catch. You are seventeen, nine days aboard the Emily Vane out of Lowestoft, and so far the only thing you have mastered is staying upright on a wet deck while the sea makes its own arrangements. You nod, haul the box onto the ice, and try not to look at the gulls wheeling over the stern like they know your name.

Above your bunk in the fo'c'sle, under the porthole, someone has written a line in pencil in a hand so neat and looping it looks copied from a book. Dreamer of impossible dreams. You ask Pat, the cook, who wrote it. He scrapes his pan and says it was there when he came aboard, and that the skipper's late brother used to read it out on Sunday mornings while the nets dried on the rails, though nobody ever admitted to liking it.
In February a gale comes down off the Dogger and the Emily Vane is three hours overdue. You stand on the harbour wall with the other mothers and wives, counting the lights that are not coming. Then she rounds the pier with a torn mainsail and a crew who look like they have been dredged up. Dennis is the last one off. He stops beside you, takes a stub of pencil from his oilskin, and writes the line on the back of your hand, slow, the way you would teach a child to form letters. You copy it onto a card that night, a little uneven at the end where the boat rolled, and pin it above your own bunk.
