Fine line script word on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of an arm with a small, single-line cursive word tattooed on the forearm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the lettering slopes upward to the right. The photo is monochrome, with a soft grey background and the arm filling most of the frame.

The hat blocks had to be soaked by six, so Ada Sowerby left the letter half written on the bench and went down to the vat with her sleeves rolled past the elbow. Cold water, then hot, then the slow slap of hands working the wool until it stopped being wool and became something else, a skin that would never come apart again. Her father had taught her that at fourteen. You can shrink a thing once, he said, and you will never get it back to what it was.

She came back up the stairs with wet hands and picked the pen up again. Dear Tom, the mill has taken on two girls from Halifax and the foreman has stopped whistling, which Mother says is a sign of grief. The rain has not let up. Her knee is no better. Every line came out sideways, as if the nib had learned to lean away from the paper, so she wrote about the weather and the foreman and nothing at all about the door he had closed behind him on the way to the boat.

At the bottom of the sheet she wrote the word she had been circling since Tuesday. I felt it the morning you went, like a cold hand pressed flat against the wool. The letters ran together and leaned up towards the corner of the page, the way her father's signature always did when he was tired of holding it level.

She folded the letter around a scrap of grey felt, the first piece she had pulled from the vat that morning, stiff and shrunk to half its size. Keep it in your pocket, she wrote on the outside. It will keep its shape longer than my hands will.
