Fine line script word on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up black and white photograph of bare skin on the side of the torso, with a small word in thin, cursive script. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the lettering sits near the centre of the frame. The soft lighting falls from the left, leaving the edges of the torso in gentle shadow.

Mum asked me to write because her hands are bad now and the pen skips across the page. She says the back bedroom is still yours, though Dad has put his bench in it and the room smells of linseed and cold tea.

Most nights I walk down to the river after the last bus, past the chip shop with the flickering tube, and think about the letters you taught me to paint freehand, no chalk line, just a brush loaded thin and a steady wrist. You said a good line should look as if it was always going to be there and you had only got around to noticing it. I still hear you saying it when I start a capital and my hand wants to wobble.

The tin of Prussian blue you left under the stairs has dried to a crust. I tried it on an offcut last week and it still goes on as thin as breath, so I have been practising in the evenings with the kitchen light off, working by the streetlamp through the window. The word keeps coming out the same. I have not thrown the tin away.

I have signed this the way you used to sign your postcards, with one word and no name, so you know it is from the man who taught you the brush. Come home or don't, but if you do, bring the tin back with you. Lovin.
