Script words on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small script tattoo reading Alma libre, set across the upper chest below the collarbone. The linework is thin and even, rendered in black ink with no shading. The phone shot is taken from above, with dark hair falling across the top of the frame and a light fabric edge along the bottom.

Dear Lucía, Mam found your postcard behind the fruit bowl, so I am answering on the good paper before the ferry can change its mind and take the afternoon with it.

You wrote 'Alma libre' across the back in that slanted hand you copied from Abuela, underlined twice, as though the card might argue. I laughed out loud in the kitchen. You never did a thing you were told in your life, and Tomas has the boat now, so there is nobody left to tell you off except the gulls, who are no use at all.
On Sunday I went down to the breakwater with the old tin trunk from under the stairs. Inside was Papa's logbook, damp at the corners, and a pair of swimming goggles that still smell of the harbour. I sat on the wall and read the entries aloud to nobody. Most were only weather and the price of diesel, but in March he had written, 'Lucía took the rudder today and would not give it back, so I sat in the stern like a passenger.'
I think that is what the card meant. Not that you were gone, only that you had taken the rudder and would not give it back. So I have left the trunk open on the step for you, and the gate is never locked, only heavy. Come home when you want to. The swifts are back under the eaves, screaming like they have news.
