There was a porter at the Llanwen Infirmary who walked the corridors from ten at night until the first bird sang, and he carried a ring of keys that opened every door in the building but one. That one led up a narrow stair to the roof, and nobody went up it except him, because the town below had always depended on him reaching the top before the sun did.

From the parapet you could see the whole valley. To the west stood the three peaks the old people called the Sisters, and between them and the hospital ran the crooked line of chimneys, the water tower, and the slate roofs of the terraces, all of it joined in one ragged edge against the sky. Idris Hollin would stand with his back to the lift housing and wait. The sun, everyone agreed, was a round thing that rolled along behind the Sisters on a string, and it needed a hand on the string to start it moving.

One November a girl on the children's ward would not sleep, and she asked him to take her up to see. She was seven and counted the stars out loud until she ran out of numbers. Idris showed her how to pull the string, which was only a rope on a pulley, and she heaved while he steadied the pole. The first thin edge came over the Sisters, a ring of small bright dots, and the peaks went black against gold.

By the time the laundry van came up the hill, the sun was clear of the ridge, and the girl was asleep on the roof step with her hand still curled round the rope.
