Stylised lettering on inner wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a small piece of stylised lettering in dark ink on the inner wrist, with letters H and E followed by a angular symbol and an i. The linework is simple and even, with no shading, and the ink appears dark teal or black. The composition is close and slightly angled, with a colourful woven bracelet and a silver peace sign pendant crossing the wrist beside the tattoo.

Dear Marnie,

The postman left your parcel on the step again, the one with the Lancaster stamp. I knew it was the bracelet because the string was bulging through the padded envelope. You never could pack anything properly. I've laid the two halves out on the kitchen table, the green and the orange you swore you'd lost, and they still knot the way you tied them at the bus shelter the summer we were sixteen.
The wood has gone wild since you left. Bramble has taken the path under the larches, and Mr Ashdown has been cutting it back with a billhook every Tuesday, grumbling that nobody walks to the old quarry any more. I went up on Sunday anyway. The beeches were dropping their nuts and the rain had stopped just long enough for me to find the mark we scratched into the stile post: HE, then the arrow, then the little i. It meant we'd meet there whenever one of us got the bus out. Someone has cut the arrow deeper since. I didn't ask who.
I'm not going to pretend I'm not cross. You said you'd write every week and I've had two postcards, both of them of sheep. But I've fixed the bracelet to my own wrist now, the silver peace sign knocking against the knot, and I'll wear it to the stile on Saturday in case the arrow means what it used to.
If you come up on the bus, bring the rest of the wool. I'm nearly out of green.
