I've taken the old ledger home again, the one with the brass corners, because Mr Hollis says the floor needs re-chalking before Saturday and I can't sleep knowing the spiral on the third board is still wrong. You'll laugh, but I've been drawing your turn all week. Left foot, a little hop, then the long open loop that carries you round the pillar and back to me like a dropped ribbon. Every time I reach the top of it, there's a small leaf where the pencil wants to stop.

Mr Hollis caught me at it on Tuesday and asked whether I'd taken up draughtsmanship at the Co-op. I said I was only mapping the waltz. He studied the sheet for a long time and said it was the first honest thing he'd seen on the premises since the band came back from Catterick, then went off to argue with the drummer about his fee.

Do come Saturday. Stand where the lamplight falls and don't look at your feet. I've marked the boards with a single curl at the edge of the floor, the place where we'll turn, and I'd like you to walk into it without counting.
