Fine line symbols across four fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Four separate close-up panels show thin black line symbols tattooed along the fingers, each made of looping curves, straight strokes and small dots. The linework is even and monoline with no shading, and the skin tone and grey background keep the focus on the marks. Each panel is framed differently, with one showing a pale painted nail at the bottom edge.

The well at Caddow Hollow had gone dry the spring the old wardens stopped coming up from the pits, and nobody in the village would say why. Mared Penhale kept the tally board at the lamp house, a slate nailed beside the door where the men chalked their shifts. Each morning she drew the same thin marks on it with a stub of pencil, a coil for the cage, a dash for the rope, two dots for the men who had gone down and not come back up. Her mother had taught her the marks. Her mother's mother had taught her mother.

In October a stranger came up the road with a satchel of tools and a face like weather. He asked for water and she gave him the dipper from the brass hook. He watched her write on the slate and said the marks were older than the mine, older than the village, and that a thing written in the right hand would hold a door shut. Mared told him the door was the shaft and it had been shut since the accident. He said that was the trouble with doors. You had to know which way they opened.
She went down with him that night, by the lamp and by the cage rope, and at the bottom of the level she found the water standing black and still. He traced each mark along the wall with one finger, slowly, the way you read a letter from someone you have not seen in years. When he came to the last dot he pressed it, and the water stirred and began, very quietly, to rise. By dawn it had reached the lip of the well in the yard above. Mared chalked a new line on the slate that morning, a long curve with no dot at the end, and left it there.
