The lift in Hollins House has been out since Tuesday, so I have been climbing the fourteen floors with the shopping and a head full of your mother's opinions. Mr Patel on eleven says the council will send someone by Friday. He said the same about the bins in March.

I took the bus down to the front yesterday, past the bingo hall and the shuttered Woolworths, and sat on the sea wall where we used to eat chips. The tide was right out. There was only one line of surf, nothing grand, just the water folding over on itself a long way off and smoothing flat again. It reminded me of the drawing you made me on the back of the gas bill when you were seven. You said it was the sea, but it looked more like a worm. I still keep it in the kitchen drawer with the spare keys.

Your mother says you have gone quiet about the job in Leeds. I am not asking you to tell me anything. I only want you to know that the window in the front room still sticks, and that on a clear evening the water is the same colour it was the day we moved in. Some things hold their shape.
