Cartoon gloved hands forming a heart on a wrist
Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two cartoon-style gloved hands meeting at the fingers to form an open heart shape in the centre. It is drawn in a single black outline with no shading or fill, so the skin shows through inside the shapes. The design is small and centred on the wrist against a plain skin background.

On the island of Scarrow, where the ferry came over only on Tuesdays, the old women said that two hands could hold a heart that no one else could break. She made the shape out of two pairs of white gloves, the kind the harbour men wore for church. She stitched the fingers together at the tips and let the thumbs fold down like the wings of a gull. When the gloves were finished she took them to the rocks at low tide and held them out toward the mainland. Her brother Eli had gone across on the Tuesday boat and not come back. Everyone said the sea had him. Maud said the sea only kept what it was given.
For three nights she waited. On the fourth, the gloves came back wet and heavy, and inside the heart of them lay a single brass button stamped with an anchor. Eli's coat had had buttons just like that. She did not cry. She went home, put the kettle on, and sewed the button to the wrist of the left glove, so that when she lifted the pair again the heart opened and closed like a mouth saying something it had not yet finished.
