Fingerprint heart tattoo
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A heart shape is built entirely from fingerprint ridges and whorls, with two curled loops visible at the centre and along the lower edge. The ink is solid black with fine, crisp lines and some slight softening at the edges of the design. The tattoo fills most of the frame against pale skin with visible fine body hair, shot straight on under even light.

Dear Mrs Okafor, I am writing because the lift at Ashdown House has stopped again, and I have been sitting on the third-floor landing with a flask and too much time to think about the fingerprint sheets you left on my kitchen table. You will remember I said I could not make them match. That was true then. It is less true now, because I took them to the cabinet at the station on Thursday, the one with the brass handles nobody oils, and I laid your thumb beside the glass from the Fenwick flat. The ridges ran north to south. The whorl sat in the same place on both, like a dropped stitch in an old jumper. I told the sergeant it was a coincidence, which is what you say when you have decided not to be a fool.

The heart you drew on the back of the sheet, the one you said was for the boy, I kept. Your own loop curls under the top of it, and I cannot stop looking. Anyone else would see a shape made from skin. I see a thumb pressed into wet clay, a mother teaching a child to leave a mark on purpose.
I will bring the sheets back when the lift works. Do not ring the station. Come down to the bins at seven, the way you did when your husband was still alive and the wind was still in the east.
Yours, with the flask, Derek
