Fingerprint heart on an inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a heart formed from concentric fingerprint ridge lines sits on the inner wrist of a light-skinned arm, shown from the palm side. The linework is fine and even, with the ridges following the outline of the heart and some areas shaded in solid black for depth. The ink is black on pale skin against a plain, softly lit background.

Dear Mags, the wedding was lovely, and I'm sorry I slipped off before the speeches. Our Ellie asked me to stand by the register table because she knew I'd want to watch the signing. Gerald's old ink pad was still rattling about in my handbag from thirty-one years at Bramhall Street, and I hadn't the heart to leave it at home.

The trouble started with the groom. Tomasz wanted a small tattoo that would mean something to Ellie and nothing to anyone else. He brought me a drawing on the back of a takeaway menu: a heart, but built from ridges. I told him a heart made from a fingerprint is only a fingerprint with ambition. He laughed and said that was exactly why he wanted it.

So I did the thing I swore I'd never do again. I rolled Ellie's index finger, then his, one over the other on a clean card, and the ridges met in the middle like two lanes merging. Gerald used to say a print is the only honest signature a person owns. I traced the overlap with a biro until the heart rose out of the lines, and Tomasz took the card home in an envelope like it was a love letter.

He had it done on Saturday, a small thing, black and fine. He sent a photograph with no message, only a row of heart emojis that I pretended not to understand. Under the ink, if you know where to look, you can still see where my pencil hesitated at the top curve. Some things only show to someone who was there when they were made. Love, Pat.
