Fishhook heart outline on the top of a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of the top of a foot with a single-line outline tattoo of a heart. The heart's lower right opening curves into a hook, with a small eye at the top left, so it reads as a fishhook. The linework is solid black with an even weight and no shading, and the photo is greyscale, so the ink and skin texture are shown in tones of grey against a dark background.

The banner in the Methodist hall had lost its second E, so it read WELCOME BACK LEEDS ROAD YEAR ELEVN, and Carol Pinder was up a stepladder fixing it with drawing pins when Gavin Shaw came in carrying two cans of squash. "You still owe me a fish," she said, without looking down.

Thirty-one years earlier, in the back row of double maths, she had slid him a folded note. Inside was a heart drawn in blue biro, its lower curve pulled round into a hook, and beneath it: Meet me at the bus shelter, Friday, bring a rod. He had not gone. He had sat on the reservoir bank with his uncle's old rod instead, watching the float not move, too ashamed to explain. She had waited at the shelter until the 47 pulled away without her, and she had never once mentioned it, which he had always found harder to forgive than a telling-off.
Later, when the urn had been unplugged and the caretaker was stacking chairs, they stood in the car park where the wind came off the sea smelling of diesel and chips. Carol unzipped her coat pocket and handed him the note, soft as cloth, its folds gone the colour of weak tea.
"I kept it because it's the only thing I ever drew that was honest," she said. Gavin took the biro from the raffle table in his pocket, smoothed the paper on the bonnet of her car, and drew a fine line from the hook down to the corner of the page, where he wrote a telephone number. "Friday?" he said. She laughed the way she had at fourteen and held out her hand for the pen.
