Fist and arrow symbol on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a solid black ink tattoo on the top of a bare foot, shown against dark soil and grass. The design is a circle containing a raised fist, with two arrows and crosses at the upper edge and a cross-marked circle motif below. The linework is bold and even with flat black fill, and the image is in plain colour with a simple, centred composition.

The frost hasn't lifted off the top pasture since Tuesday, so Dad and I have spent the week mending wall instead of breaking ground. Mr Harrow from the co-op came up on Thursday with his clipboard and his new offer, and he left with the same answer he came with. Dad didn't say much. He just took the chalk from the tractor cab and drew the sign on the gatepost where the lane meets the road: a ring, a fist raised up through the middle, and two arrows splayed at the top as if someone had tried to pick a direction and chosen all of them.

Lou Pryce down at the shop says the others have started doing the same on their boundary stones. Nobody agreed to it. It just appeared, one post at a time, the way ice creeps in at the edges of the dew pond before it covers the middle. Harrow's lorries have to slow for the bends now, and the drivers keep reading the marks as they pass, like they're trying to work out whether they're a warning or a tally.
I went out with a tin of tar this morning and redid the one on the byre door, because the rain had softened the edges. My hands were so cold the brush kept slipping, and the lines came out wobbly, but when I stepped back it looked like it was pushing against the weather. Dad saw it from the field and nodded, which from him is a speech.
Harrow's deadline is the end of February. Dad says the land has outlasted every piece of paper that's ever been written about it. I'll post this on Monday with a stamp I've had since summer, so if it's late, you'll know the snow got into the lane again. Come at Easter. Bring your boots. The top wall still needs a better hand than mine.
