Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Four black bird silhouettes and one blue bird sit in a row on a horizontal wire across the forearm. Three solid black lines encircle the arm above and below the wire, forming a band. The linework is bold and the shading is flat, with the blue bird as the only colour against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Margaret had counted the birds on the telegraph wire four times by the time the band finished its waltz, and each time there were five. Four sat in a neat row, dark as coal dust. Cyril had promised to dance the last waltz with her before the boat train left, and she had promised her mother she would be home by eleven. Neither promise seemed heavy until the wind came up off the water and the wire began to sway. All five birds shuffled along the line together, feathers puffed against the cold, and Margaret felt the old ache of watching something she could not hold.

When the band struck up the last number, the four black birds lifted at once and went north over the slate roofs, their wings loud as shaken sheets. The blue one stayed exactly where it was. Margaret stood at the top of the steps with her gloves in one hand and waited for it to follow, and it did not.

Cyril came out with his coat over his arm and looked up at the wire. He counted under his breath, the way their father used to count the fare money, then said, "Four off, one on." Margaret laughed and took his arm, and they walked toward the station without looking back.
