Marta kept the pattern book in the cupboard above the oven, because the damp had got into the loft and rotted two of her grandmother's. Every spring the fishermen's wives came up Quay Lane with a length of undyed cord and asked for a band to bring their men home, and every spring she sat them by the window and drew the same five strips: the zigzag of the swell, the rows of dots for the herring, the diamonds for the nets, and at the edge three small triangles stacked like the peaks above the bay.

Joss, who mended hulls and believed none of it, came in one wet March and asked why the triangles climbed. Marta said they were the steps up the cliff path, and the cliff path was what a body took when the sea had finished with them. He laughed, bought a tin of tar and left the change on the sill.

That October the Brenna went out ahead of a gale and did not come back. Her crew were all Pelling men, and Joss walked the harbour wall every evening after that, looking. Marta found him there one night with the wind pulling at his coat. She opened the book at the triangles, showed him where her grandmother's pen had pressed too hard and bled the ink, and tied a band of cord around the iron post at the wall's end, the way the wives did.

In spring she drew the five strips as she always had, but at the top of the triangles she left one step empty, counting it for the men who had gone up the path and not come down.
