The rain had come in over the hill before dawn and settled on Lowmarrow market as if it meant to stay. Mair Tennant pulled her tarpaulin tight over the board where eight strips of gold lay in rows, each one beaten thin enough to bend round a wrist without a clasp. Her late husband had hammered them out in the cold months, and she sold them for a penny a length to anyone who asked. Most asked for the zigzags, because a zigzag looked like weather, and people liked to think they could wear the weather.

A lad came under the awning soaked to the skin and pointed at the triangles. Blue, gold, blue, gold, a chain of them that ran on like a fence round a garden nobody had planted. He had three coins in a sock. Mair took them, handed him the band, then reached under the board for the small pink piece, a lip of enamel shaped like a shell, and pressed it into the middle of the chain with her thumb. 'That one belongs to the sea,' she said. 'It lent it me for the winter. You'll have to give it back when the tide turns.' He laughed, thinking she was teasing, and walked off into the wet with his arm held out stiff, as a man carries a lantern.
He came back on the third market day, when the rain had finally stopped and the gold was catching what was left of the light. He did not say what he had come for. With a bent pin he lifted the pink shell out of the chain, the way you lift a splinter, and laid it on her board. Then he took a purple square band from the row and wound it round his wrist.
Mair put the shell back in her apron pocket, where it had always gone, and the tide, she supposed, could wait another winter.
