Five geometric solids in a row on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A row of five outlined three-dimensional geometric shapes runs diagonally along the inner forearm, from a triangular tetrahedron-like form near the elbow to an icosahedron near the wrist. The linework is thin and even, with simple single-line edges and no shading. The single dark ink sits on pale skin against a soft, blurred neutral background, with the design centred in the frame.

The wind off the Tallow Flats had already loosened the first wax seal by the time you reached the cairn, so you learned the order by counting faces instead. Four triangles for the first case, six squares for the second, then eight triangles bound edge to edge, twelve pentagons, and last of all twenty triangles that caught the sun like a lamp. The Queen of Harrowmere had sent you up the salt road with the five cases strapped to your pack and one rule written on the lid of each: open only when the one before lies empty at your feet.

The wood was ash and smelt of the mill where your mother once swept floors, and each solid was carved so thin along its edges that you could see the light through them. At the fourth cairn a goatherd asked what you were carrying. You told him the truth, that the Queen wanted the mountain to know how many ways a stone could be closed. He laughed and said the mountain had never needed a count to stand.
At the fifth cairn you lifted the twenty-faced solid out of its case and found the bottom of the box still lined with a folded paper. It was in the mapmaker's hand, and it said only that the last shape belongs to whoever walks back down. You turned the ash over in your palm, then slid it into your coat and started down the salt road, leaving the empty case open to the wind.
