Dorothy Ashby kept the post office then, and she was the only one in town who could write a hand worth reading. Every Thursday she sat at the back counter with her pen and a bottle of blue-black ink, practising her capitals on the blotter like a girl at a finishing school. Nobody asked her why. We all knew it was for Walter Kell, who drove the milk lorry round the far side of the moor and came back each night smelling of wet sheep.

When the bridge finally came back up, Walter found a card waiting in his cab, tucked behind the sun visor. Just two lines in her looping script. Always on my mind. Forever in my heart. Underneath she had drawn two little hearts, one tilted, one leaning against it, as if they were trying to stand up together.

He never said a word to her about it. He married her in October, and the card went into the tin with the ration books. Ask anyone in Tesbury and they'll tell you it was the hearts that did it, though I have always thought it was the bridge.
