Mountain landscape in a circle with sun and stars
Fine line · Colour · Flash
A circular emblem shows a mountain range with peaks rising on the right, a large sun or moon behind them and small four-point stars scattered across the dark sky. The ground below is rendered with flowing horizontal hatched lines that fade into a curved base. The artwork uses fine gold linework on a plain black background with no shading beyond the line density.

No, don't reach for the bread yet, the moon hasn't finished with us. Where was I? Ah, the Seven Shoulders of Carrowmere. Every child in that kingdom knows the tallest of them, the one with the grey crown that catches the last light, and every child is told it once refused to let the sun go down.

King Oswic the Ploughed wanted a road that ran straight from his hall to the sea, and the tallest shoulder stood in the way. He sent masons with iron wedges and a clerk with a measuring cord. Each evening the sun slid behind the peak and the moon rose out of the lowland barley, the two of them trading the sky like market women trading a jug. The masons climbed up at dawn and came back down at dusk with dust in their beards and nothing cut.
Then a goatherd's girl called Marit, who had no business with kings, took a bowl of barley and a lantern up the slope. She sat with the mountain until the wind told her what it wanted, which was for its streams to run where they always had. So she walked down to the hall, stood dripping on the flagstones, and asked the king to let the water go home. He laughed and had her thrown out, but she left him with a small mercy: count the stars on a clear night, she said, and every one is a lamp some patient soul has lit to show the way.
The king never counted them. The road bends around the mountain to this day, and the ploughmen of Carrowmere still count the stars before they sow, just in case one of them is asking them to wait.
