Flock of birds on wrists

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Several arms overlap, each showing a small black tattoo of birds in flight arranged in a diagonal line across the inner wrist and forearm. The birds are solid black silhouettes with simple, clean edges and no shading. The skin is light and the background is a blurred floor and fabric, with the composition focused on the tattoos.

The shutters on Gilbey Street were still down when Ruth lifted the first tray of tin loaves from the proving cupboard, and the cold came in under the back door like a dog wanting to be let in. Dev came in at quarter past five with his coat buttoned wrong, complaining about the late bus. He found her at the window, hands still floury, watching a line of starlings cross the grey strip of sky above the car park. "They come every morning now," she said. "Same route, same time the rye goes in." He said starlings were a nuisance and had stripped the gutter off the back wall last spring. She didn't argue. The flock had bent its line over the roof and was tilting south-west in one long stroke, like someone drawing a sentence without lifting the pen.

They worked without talking. The seeded batch came out, then the plain white, the crusts crackling as they cooled on the racks. By six the sky over the rooftops had gone the colour of weak tea, and the birds were gone, leaving the cables sagging with their absence.

Ruth wrote the day's board in chalk: sourdough, sixty pence off after six. Beneath it, almost without thinking, she drew a small row of marks going down and to the right. Dev squinted at them. "What's that supposed to be?" "Directions," she said, wiping the chalk from her fingers. "For whoever's late for the bus."
